The Peak District is one of the UK’s most visited national parks covering approximately 555 square miles, and we understood why thousands descend on the beautiful countryside every year as soon as we passed the ‘Welcome to the Peak District’ sign. Set a few miles in the park boundary was The Devonshire Arms at Pilsleya country inn offering “great food, excellent ales and comfortable rooms, situated in the heart of the Chatsworth Estate”.
After driving for several hours, we wanted to charge our electric car and then check in and recharge our own batteries.
The electric charging points were unfortunately out of order – not something an EV owner wants to hear when you’re in the middle of nowhere with limited mileage on the clock! But after a short brainstorm, the employees managed to find a solution.
As for the room, The Devonshire Arms is made up of several buildings, and our room was in one that looked out over the kitchen gardens and the beautiful countryside beyond.
The room was comfortable and loaded with soft furnishings that made it cozy and inviting, and the bathroom was large and modern.

Described as “blissfully luxurious,” the Gallery fine dining restaurant had three AA rosettes.
Initially the atmosphere was a bit stiff, but the lack of background music was remedied when a large jovial party entered.
The restaurant offers a tasting menu, but we opted for the A La Carte. For starters, we tried the cod ceviche, with avocado, wasabi, squid ink and sorrel, as well as the mackerel with satay, green chilli, mango and coconut.
The Derbyshire lamb was recommended for the main course, along with Jersey Royal potatoes, peas and carrots. A Taste of Chatsworth Beef was also chosen to see if it could rival the previous night’s dish.
To complete the meal, the dark chocolate pudding with Kirsh, cherry and chili topped off a delicious meal.
The next day, after we checked out, we decided to enter Chatsworth House as we were only a few miles away.
The stately home is where the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire live and the grounds were beautiful – well worth a trip!
