Smart hack from vacation experts to save money on your baggage allowance

Chelsea Dickenson, 32, said holidaymakers are desperate for ways to save money on their summer holiday this year as the cost of living continues to rise. So the woman, from North London, has come up with a series of tips and tricks.

These hacks involve stuffing clothes into a large neck pillowcase to take with you on the plane, rather than packing these items in a suitcase. Airlines often have baggage allowance for each passenger, and when bags exceed these figures, passengers are charged fees or asked to remove items at check-in.

So, as the frugal Chelsea explained on TikTok, if you put clothes in the pillowcase, you’ll save space in suitcases.

“People are definitely looking for something new to save the pennies,” Chelsea, who runs cheapholidayexpert.com, told Express.co.uk.

“I’ve seen a huge increase in the number of questions I get about saving money, especially about cheap flights. However, what I always tell people is that you need to focus on cheap accommodation and cheap daily costs to really get a great value getaway.” to get that won’t cost a fortune after you’ve booked the flight.

“People who are used to booking the same holiday every year notice a big difference between pre-pandemic prices and now.

“However, this doesn’t mean they should give up hope for a vacation – instead, use this as an opportunity to try something new – whether that’s a destination, mode of transport, or even their food and drink while you’re away .”

Chelsea’s tips come because research shows that more than a quarter (26 percent) of vacationers suggest the best deal on accommodation or transport is the most important factor when you go on vacation, over tanning (18 percent) and lots of photos ( 16 percent).

Half of those surveyed by transport and delivery app Bolt also say that they have stricter budgets for their holidays this summer than in previous years.

Commenting on the statistics, low-cost travel expert Chelsea said: “For those trying to get away for the first time since the pre-pandemic, it can come as a real shock to see how much travel costs have risen – especially if you’re trying to get away from a popular destination in a peak period Coupled with the rising cost of living, saving money has never been more important and I’ve seen a huge increase in the demand for tips and tricks that can help people cut costs on their travels away.

“I always make sure to research if ride apps like Bolt are available in my destination. It takes away the fear of being overcharged because you’re told in advance what to expect to pay, and they’ll just charge the card on your profile – meaning you don’t have to fuss and don’t need the country’s currency once you land.”

Bolt offers a taxi service in more than 400 cities in dozens of countries around the world, including many in Europe such as France, Spain and Portugal.

It also offers e-scooters and e-bikes in some cities.

The survey of 2,000 Britons found that nearly one in six plan to walk, rather than use public transport, as a way to cut costs on holiday.

And more than a third said they would like to forego a fancy restaurant this year and prefer a takeaway (37 percent) during their breaks.

Chelsea continued: “If you want to save money but still enjoy the food, there are often independent eateries available in food delivery apps like Bolt, so why not order like a local?

“If you don’t have the space in your accommodation, why not take your meal to your nearest green space or beach to check off another experience at the same time.

“What I always tell people is that you should focus on cheap accommodation and cheap daily expenses to really get a great value getaway that won’t cost a fortune after you book the flight.”
