Portugal is now on red alert for extreme heat.
Fires are expected in the country and the foreign ministry warned that “mainland Portugal will be in a state of emergency until midnight July 15 due to exceptionally high temperatures and an increased risk of wildfires”.
“There is an increased risk of wildfires during the summer months and in hot and dry weather.”
While it is still safe to travel to Portugal, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends “staying vigilant and following the guidelines of your airline or tour operator if you find yourself affected”.
“Industrial action can happen occasionally and cause delays and disruption to travel.”
The weather institute IPMA said the warm weather is expected to continue in the coming days.
