National Geographic has released its list of ‘Best of the World’ destinations for 2023. This year, a major city in the UK has been named one of the world’s best places to visit.
Manchester was the only city in the UK to make the list and was chosen for several exciting reasons.
The city was celebrated for the Manchester Museum, which is due to reopen in February 2023 after a £15 million transformation project.
The National Trust’s Castlefield Viaduct was also praised, a former industrial railway bridge that is now an incredible city park with a skyline.
Sheona Southern, managing director of Marketing Manchester, said: “This is huge news for Manchester and we are delighted that the city is recognized as one of the world’s top destinations to visit in 2023.
“This award comes after a turbulent time for the visitor economy and is testament to the exciting developments and openings that lie ahead in 2023.
“With major world-class cultural openings at Manchester Museum and Factory International, new music offerings in the growing AO Arena and opening of Co-Op Live, beautiful new green space in Mayfield Park and Castlefield Viaduct, not to mention incredible new food and drinking experiences and stunning new places to stay, Greater Manchester continues to bolster its offerings as an exciting international destination.”
National Geographic also highlighted the chance to get a behind-the-scenes look at one of the world’s most famous football stadiums.
It read: “Visit the playing fields of a football team in Manchester and also be inspired by the city’s art scene.”
Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium is the city’s top-rated attraction on Tripadvisor and visitors praised the stadium tour.
One person said: “What a fantastic experience for Man City fans! We never felt rushed and were able to ask lots of questions.”
The John Rylands Library, which holds one of the world’s finest collections of rare books, is also highly regarded.

Other top spots were Switzerland, Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia and San Francisco, USA.
