British tourists have faced long queues and canceled flights at major UK airports this six months. The sector is struggling with staff shortages.
“The slow government processing of mandatory security passes, for new starters, exacerbates the delays in getting enough resources into the right areas.
“All of this is compounded by the fact that there are simply fewer people available to recruit.
“The workforce has shrunk, either put off by under-wage or attracted to better-paying jobs in Europe, leaving people with no incentive to come to the UK.”
Travel expert Simon Calder told British tourists to “make a big fuss” if they get stuck in a long queue.
Transport Minister Grant Shapps said: “We are grateful to the airlines and operators who have continued to deliver good service despite the current pressure and we recognize that not all operators have been affected in the same way.
“I also understand the financial pressure on the airline industry, but it doesn’t excuse poor planning and overbooking flights they can’t operate. The companies that have experienced the most disruptions need to learn from those that have run the services smoothly.
“We will continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure that consumers do not experience further disruptions.”
