Chiron said ships usually don’t come within 1,000 feet of glaciers, but sometimes collide with small breakaways.
He said it was not common for a ship to change course after such an incident and said Norwegian Cruise Lines appears to be operating with “an abundance of caution”.
Cruise ship crashes are uncommon, although one of the world’s largest ships recently made headlines when it crashed into a dock.
Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas crashed into dock at Falmouth Harbor in Jamaica.
