‘Complicated’ Brexit could cause chaos for Britons holidaying in Spain this year

The Spanish Aviation Association ALA has said summer looks “complicated” for tourists. The association said multiple issues were responsible, including Brexit.

Spanish airports face staff shortages as they struggle to recruit after the pandemic.

Due to Brexit, staff must now receive more training to handle British tourists, who make up a significant proportion of tourists in Spain.

The ALA said: “Brexit has made things more complicated as EU personnel now need more documentation and accreditations, as well as training new recruits.”

However, Spain said the country’s problems are not as bad as the current chaos at British airports.

The association said staff in Spain were laid off for the entire pandemic, while the UK scheme was set to expire in September 2021.

This has made it easier for the country to retain workers, although there are still staffing issues.

Some airlines have complained that there are not enough staff to handle tourists from outside the EU.

In a normal year, around 18 million Britons visit Spain, so the impact of Brexit means there will be many more non-EU citizens for the Spanish authorities to process.

NOT MISSING

British tourists are required to have their passports stamped when entering and leaving the EU, while EU citizens do not need this.

Britons have sometimes experienced delays of around 45 minutes due to long queues at border control.

Spanish airline Iberia has said more than 15,000 people missed flights in March due to passport delays.

Since those problems, the Spanish government has deployed 500 additional police officers at 12 major airports.

This week, the British government issued a new warning for British tourists traveling to Portugal.

While Britons can use the electronic passport gates in Portugal, they still need to have their passport stamped by an official.

The government warned tourists to keep their boarding passes in case their passports are not stamped.

A boarding pass with the date of entry into the country must prove when they crossed the border.
